The Lessons of Mogadishu and Their Application to the Future of Warfare

Abstract

The lessons learned from the US military involvement in Mogadishu, Somalia in the early 1990s prove that technologically outmatched adversaries are capable of exploiting US critical vulnerabilities through tactical actions to achieve strategic victories, and this lesson should be kept in mind while pursuing and third offset strategy. As technology becomes cheaper and more available on a global scale, MUM-T capabilities will be easily achievable by non-state adversaries of the US military, and they will be able to leverage these capabilities to increase their ability to negatively impact American campaigns.
