The Trump Administration: Bad News for East Asia?

Abstract

In recent decades, US leadership of trade and security has been the dominant stabilizing factor in East Asia. Trade has anchored the US in Asia, enabled by a robust US military presence. However, this approach has been disavowed by the Trump administration's protectionist worldview that elevates the role of military power above diplomacy and trade. Small states seek security in the orbit of larger states, they are sensitive to the rhetoric of great powers; the Trump administrations espoused worldview leads small states to perceive a US turn from trade and security leadership, while escalating forward military presence. The complex consequences of small states adapting to the new reality is destabilizing.
