The Glass Ceiling: The Role of Fire Support Officers in Maneuver Units

Abstract

Acknowledging the gaps in doctrine, training, and personnel selected to fill fire support billets over the past thirty years, the artillery community has made significant changes to increase the capability of its personnel and therefore the supported maneuver units to which they will be assigned. However, there remains a glass ceiling of how the supporting fire support officers are employed by the support unit. Even with the changes made within the artillery community to staff Fire Support Teams with more experienced officers there is an aversion to placing fire support officers in key fire support billets. This leads to a misuse of fire support officers and could have negative impacts on the future of the habitual relationship between the two communities.
