Vietnamization, Airpower, and Forgetting History in Iraq
Abstract
After Richard Nixon was elected, he enacted a strategy to withdraw from Vietnam entitled Vietnamization. The strategy was tested in 1970 in Cambodia, 1971 in Laos, and 1972 in Vietnam during the Easter Offensive. In all cases, victory or failure was determined largely by the presence of US advisors and massive application US airpower. In Iraq, the US has fixed some mistakes, but has increasingly repeated errors made in Vietnam that may cause long term defeat against the next threat that emerges.
