Deception: A Necessity of Modern Warfare

Abstract

The art of military deception has always been a part of warfare and is an integral part of planning a successful military campaign. As military weapon systems and tactics have evolved over the centuries so has the character of war and the ability to conduct military deception. However, as growth in technologies over time has enabled more effective and elaborate deception, the study of history shows that the principles of deception operations and the foundational techniques to conduct deception have been consistent throughout the evolution of warfare. To gain a position of advantage over near-peer competitors, U.S. military commanders must utilize Military Deception to cause either action or inaction that is beneficial to the outcome of the operation. Currently, there is a lack of training, education, and equipment to adequately prepare commander for this task.
