Beyond M113: Developing an Armoured Infantry Capability for the Australian Army

Abstract

Mechanised battalions employing the M113AS4 (APC) comprise fifty per cent of the Australian Armys infantry capability. The projected 2025 acquisition of an Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) under Project LAND 400-3 will significantly enhance the lethality and survivability of infantry soldiers within these battalions. This paper will evaluate the reasons, examine operational examples, and offer a way forward to support evolution to a specialised structure and method of employment for infantry operating an IFV that goes beyond the present M113 mechanised battalion.
