Breaking Free from the Grips of Our Teaching Traditions: Recommendations to Improve Marine Corps Professional Military Education

Abstract

Adult learning theory has greatly evolved in the last seventy years. Unfortunately, Command and Staff College and other USMC PME institutions still use instruction methods developed on early 1900s learning theories. When PME schools change, the focus is typically on what is taught and not how it is taught. This paper will explore the structure of the Command and Staff learning model and recommend new, interactive learning methods based on modern research that can be applied immediately to increase student learning.
