Artillery Battery Operations: In Response to the Marine Corps Operating Concept

Abstract

The Marine Corps Artillery community must make organizational change to support maneuver forces in a future conflict of contested domains as envisioned by the Marine Corps Operating Concept. An understanding of the foresight and innovation leading to the reorganization of the Marine Corps during the interwar years (1918-1941) and resulting in Marine combat forces being best prepared for the contested operating environment found in the battle of Guadalcanal can aid in the process. Organization and employment of the artillery battery, with multiple firing platoons, as the smallest tactical element within the Marine Corps artillery regiment provides the necessary dispersion to support the distributed maneuver force while also enhancing the survivability of elements across contested domains on the future battlefield.
