New Zealand's Strategic Challenge: A Comprehensive Response to the Challenges to Sovereignty, Prosperity, and Stability that Arise from China's New Interventionist Foreign Policies

Abstract

China has adopted increasingly interventionist foreign policies under Xi Jinping, which are characterized by the use of competitive strategies, co-optation of private enterprise, and three-dimensional integration. Despite the close economic ties between the two states, China's new strategic approach poses a multi-faceted challenge to New Zealand's interests. New Zealand should adopt a more comprehensive approach to national security that includes three lines of effort: safeguarding its democratic institutions, preserving its economic base, and supporting regional stability in the South Pacific.
