Birthing Cultural Change: Pregnancy and Marine Corps Policy

Abstract

Marine Corps orders and practices for pregnant and postpartum Marines are ambiguous to both Marines and their leadership. Instead of treating pregnancy and the recovery of child birth as a natural part of a Marines life, it is treated as an injury or simply ignored, creating an unconscious bias against pregnant and postpartum Marines. Marine Corps attitudes toward pregnancy can be changed through changes in orders and policies.
