The Dragon in Argentina: Is China Threatening Relations Between the United States and Argentina?

Abstract

During the 2008 financial crisis, China was able to make its sudden appearance in Latin America. Argentina, one of the countries hit by the crisis, found in China an ally that could give Argentina financial stability. In 2015, the Argentine Congress granted property and China built there the Deep Space Antenna to monitor Chinese space missions. However, the dual use of the Antenna could interrupt communications from the United States as well as obtain intelligence from the United States partners and allies. Due to the influence exerted by China on this delicate matter, Argentina could be at risk of having its relations with the United States deteriorated.
