Increased Dependence on Aviation Simulators in a Fiscally Constrained and Readiness Deficient Environment: A Balanced Approach for Marine Corps Aviation Training

Abstract

Although aviation simulators are beneficial towards achieving limited training objectives in a fiscally constrained and readiness deficient environment, overreliance on simulator utility and forecast technology maturation will be problematic in the tactical environment. The many enduring simulator limitations combined with future challenges limit the potential readiness and proficiency that the aviation simulator offers. Learned behavior from increased simulator sorties will inevitably translate into pilot tendencies in the aircraft as aviators fight the way they are trained. There are boundaries required for increased reliance on the aviation simulator and a comprehensive training curriculum cannot neglect the lessons learned from stressors associated with actual flight rather than simulation.
