Cyber Sovereignty: The Assault on Human Rights

Abstract

The creation of the Internet has changed how humans communicate and interact across the globe. The openness of the Internet stands in direct contradiction to that of sovereignty. Additionally, concerns in regards to the security of critical infrastructure or systems are a concern of states. Some states see the free access of information that is counter to their way of life unacceptable and have applied concepts of Westphalian Sovereignty to the Internet to the point of restricting human rights. To not fully support and prioritize human rights over state sovereignty is an alarming prospect that should be avoided if at all possible.
