A Framework for Assessing the Naval Character of MAGTF Ground Operations

Abstract

According to the 2016 Marine Corps Operating Concept (MOC), the contemporary Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) is notorganized, equipped or trained for modern amphibious warfare. The aim of this paper is to propose a framework that defines the navalcharacter of MAGTF ground operations to provide a departure point for balanced future force development. This paper will analyze thecriticisms of contemporary amphibious operations, service doctrine, the future operating environment and the modern history of forcedevelopment within the U.S. Marine Corps. The framework proposed by this paper has three components. First, the constraints ofamphibious shipping and landing craft limits the use of heavy equipment by the MAGTF and privileges the employment of warfightingconcepts designed around light and medium ground platforms. Second, naval aviation provides the majority of the tactical mobility.
