Science Fiction to Reality: Leading in Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

In 1958, Senator Lyndon B. Johnson called the US to action after the Soviet Union successfully launched the first satellite into space. Johnson recognizing the importance of the event declared, Control of space means control of the world. Thus, the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States began; likewise, another race is underway to be the first nation to harness the technological advantages of artificial intelligence (AI) fully. For the U.S. military to maintain a premier force around the world, it must lead in understanding, harnessing and implementing AI throughout the Joint Force. Failure to do so will result in outdated systems and equipment that fails to defend the US and its interests around the world.
