Marine Aviation Operating in a Contemporary Near-Peer Environment

Abstract

As the air arm of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF), Marine aviation today is not postured to operate in a contemporary near-peer environment with threat such as China due to antiquated Cold War and post-Cold War assumptions, concepts, and technologies. China's goal at limiting both the US Navy's and Marine Corps's freedom of maneuvering in the area while cementing China as the stabilizing force in the region through aggressive development and its employment of A2/AD, AI, and UAS capabilities. As it currently stance, Marine aviation is experiencing a crisis that requires a paradigm shift in terms of manning, training, equipping, organizing, and thinking to be relevant.
