Was the American Civil War Inevitable? Challenge of Prevention 1820-1861

Abstract

The series of compromises in the years leading up to the American Civil War designed to appease both sides merely postponed the internal turmoil. The agrarian economy of the South depended on slavery for raw goods production, versus the industrialized economy of manufactured goods in the North. Diplomacy ultimately gave way to the inevitable military action with the South seceding and fighting to preserve its way of life and the North fighting to preserve the Union and freeing an enslaved people.
