Forward From the Past: Marine Corps Engineer Operations in World War II are Pathways to the EABO Challenges of Today

Abstract

The 2019 Commandants Planning Guidance directs a renewed focus on preparing for great power conflict in the USINDOPACOM area of operations. Concepts such as Expeditionary Advance Base Operations (EABO) provide operational blueprints for the prosecution of a Pacific Theater campaign, but do not specifically dictate how engineer operating forces will be employed. The successful integration of Marine Corps engineers during World War II, focused on task organization, bridge operations, horizontal construction, and bulk liquid operations, has specific application to the present-day EABO concept. Studying the lessons taken from World War II leads to a better understanding of the essential nature of engineer operations in a great power conflict.
