Taking Marine Education from Good to Great

Abstract

Current challenges highlight the necessity to begin educating officers with a multi-disciplinary approach once they have signed a contract to effectively prepare them to meet the intellectual requirements of a complex environment. This begins the system of thinking, which builds a solid base early in a Marines career, rather than building toward a pinnacle at the end. This construct challenges the current professional military education (PME) continuum. In a recent interview Brigadier General Turner, Commanding General of Marine Air Ground Combat Center, made a statement about the Service Level Training paradigm shift. A redeploying unit, now faces a five domain high threat enemy in a dynamic free play exercise that is a different training paradigm than a year and a half ago. The Marine Corps needs to align its education philosophy with its training philosophy.
