Assessing the Effectiveness of the Commandant's Force Redesign in the Competition Phase and Beyond

Abstract

The Commandants redesigned Marine Corps could be an effective deterrent to Chinas aggressive actions in the competition phase in the South China Sea provided the national command authority is willing to more aggressively utilize the redesigned force in that area. However, the force redesign will likely sacrifice III Marine Expeditionary Forces (III MEF) ability to project power ashore in support of forcible entry operations, most saliently in the defense of Taiwan, and thus will serve neither as a deterrent to China pursuing a forcible reunification with Taiwan, or, as an effective stand-in force in that circumstance.
