The Contribution of U.S. Seapower to Ending the Cold War: The Reagan Administration's Maritime Strategy

Abstract

Reagans Maritime Strategy was a new US approach of more robust naval deployments and exercises that proved the U.S. Navy capable of new and more aggressive missions. In addition, increasing the size of the Navy and modernizing its capabilities bolstered conventional deterrence and pulled the Soviet Union deeper into a naval arms race beyond its economic capacity, which it could not sustain, let alone win. The Maritime Strategy was a vital element to reestablishing American naval superiority and was one of the causes leading to the collapse of the Soviet government.
