Disrupting Disinformation: Servicemember Information Force Protection through Media Literacy Training

Abstract

Implementing standardized US Department of Defense media literacy training across the force will better prepare servicemembers to understand media effects and counter adversarial disinformation efforts. Adversaries, such as Russia and China, continue to use disinformation campaigns to increase divisiveness and undermine US democratic institutions. People are inherently vulnerable to disinformation and underprepared to combat it, and its effects on our servicemembers present a significant force protection threat. The US Government is not currently able to interdict malign actors and stop disinformation, but media literacy training is an effective and affordable way to harden the primary attack surface the mind of the individual servicemember and it can be implemented by the DoD immediately.
