Financial Coaching in the Corps: Reducing Stress of Junior Marines

Abstract

Given the absence of financial education during adolescence, junior Marines have the most need for financial coaching, especially with the first year of their career. While financial education in the Marine Corps has improved over the past decade, current financial education policy does not adequately identify Marine leaders at the lowest levels to mentor junior Marines in basic personal financial management. Furthermore, policy dictates financial education to begin too late in a Marine's career. Empowering Marine leaders with the responsibility to financially coach junior Marines, particularly within the first year of their military career, can prevent financial problems early which will lead to decreased financial stress and increased combat effectiveness.
