The Spanish American War: The Bitterest Sunset in Spain

Abstract

The Spanish-American War was the starting point for converting the United States into the first world power. Spanish colonial policy made Cuba's loss irreversible, but the Spanish refusal to sell the island was the cause for the war against the United States. Spain was not ready for the battle. However, the Spanish government preferred to lose the fleet in Cuba to a military uprising in Spain. The outcome was a catastrophe that nobody expected.
