The Influence of Arctic Development on Dutch Sea Power: The Implication of Pacific States' Interest in Arctic access for Future Dutch naval strategy

Abstract

Arctic warming will make the North Sea Route (NSR) more accessible and new undersea resources available. The anticipated opening of the NSR has drawn interest from the Asia-Pacific maritime states. International Organizations and individual countries struggle to form an internationally recognized regime. It is crucial to establish a rule-based order to ensure freedom of navigation. More frequent use of the NSR will impact the Netherlands via the port of Rotterdam. The Netherlands can contribute to the safety and stability in the Arctic and Dutch waters by adjusting Dutch Seapower and increasing cooperation between coastguards and navies.
