A Way to Do Windows Better: A Case for Specialization of Marine Ground Combat Formations

Abstract

The Corps' future problem set can be stated as such: The Corps will retain responsibility for two distinct missions. Currently, it is incapable of conducting FEO against a peer competitor and must modernize. This modernization requires time, manpower, and funding to be successful. Irregular threats, however, are likely to complicate this modernization effort by diverting time, manpower, and funding from it. From this, the true question posed by the NDAA can be reduced even further: How will the Corps modernize its amphibious forces while simultaneously responding to irregular threats? A potential answer to this question emerges in the form of specialization of Marine units.
