Information Technology: Leadership Remains Key to Agencies Making Progress on Enterprise Architecture Efforts

Abstract

A well-defined enterprisearchitecture (EA) is a blueprint forinstitutional modernization andevolution that consists of modelsdescribing how an entity operatestoday and how it intends to operatein the future, along with a plan forhow it intends to transition to thisfuture state. Such architectures areessential tools whose effectivedevelopment and use arerecognized hallmarks of successfulorganizations. Because of theimportance of these architectures,GAO was asked to determine(1) what progress federal agencieshave made in effectivelydeveloping, implementing, andmaintaining their EAs and (2) theOffice of Management and Budgets(OMB) actions to advance the stateof EA development and use acrossthe federal government.
