Stockpile Objectives of Strategic and Critical Materials Should Be Reconsidered Because of Shortages

Abstract

The strategic and critical materials stockpile objectives were reduced on April 16, 1973, by a quantity valued at more than $4 billion, leaving stockpile objectives valued at $700 million. The purpose of stockpiles is to accumulate materials for a national emergency. Because of the large reduction in strategic stockpile objectives, with no readily apparent changes in the military security situation, GAO reviewed the procedure for computing needs and managing the national stockpile.
