Abstract

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is the audit, evaluation, and investigative arm of the Congress; it exists to support the Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities and to help improve the performance and ensure accountability of the federal government for the benefit of the American people. As a legislative branch agency, GAO is exempt from many laws that apply to executive branch agencies.
