Study of Perclene (Tetrachloroethylene) as a Solvent for Use in the Decontamination of Airplanes

Abstract

This is a progress report on the study of the decontamination of persistent chemical warfare agents. A number of solvents were studied to determine their suitability as solvents to be used with RH-195 in the decontamination of naval airplanes and Navy deck paint. Tetrachlororethylene (Perclene) was found to be the best of these solvents for use in the decontamination of airplanes. Perclene/RH-195 is better than TCE/RH-195 for this purpose for reasons which are outlined in this report.
