The Potential for Cognitive Apprenticeship: A Review of Best Practices for Instructor Certification in the Maneuver Captains Career Course

Abstract

Working with the Maneuver Center of Excellence, Command and Tactics Directorate (CATD) at Fort Benning, GA, researchers conducted a targeted assessment of the Maneuver Captains Career Courses (MCCC) instructor certification course and found that the certification process is a major strength that can serve as model for other programs in and beyond the Army. The purpose of the paper is to summarize the certification process, review the strengths of this approach, and outline our recommendations to align further the certification course with a cognitive apprenticeship model. We argue that this process can help incoming small group leaders (SGLs) feel more prepared to teach, develop their own instructional style, and become effective instructors earlier in their careers. This certification approach could be utilized in other courses that need to transform competent Soldiers into effective educators.
