Tests of Captured German Balloon Borne - Radar Decoy

Abstract

Several practical duplicates of the captured German decoy device were constructed, and preliminary tests were carried out at the Chesapeake Bay Annex of this Laboratory. Further tests were made at sea using radar equipments on the destroyer U.S.S. Doyle and comparing the decoy echo with that from an actual submarine, the U.S.S. S-16. During these tests it was possible to observe the decoy from various aspects (upwind, downwind, and crosswind). These tests were made from the ASBEVLANT base at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. Observations were also made with planes from this base carrying ASB and ASG radar equipments. Motion picture records (16 mm) were made of the decay echo on several radar equipments at the Naval Research Laboratory Chesapeake Bay Annex and on the destroyer radars.
