Characterization of the Metabolic Regulatory Protein 5 AMP Activated Protein Kinase in the Human Parasite, Schistosoma mansoni: Analysis of Developmental Regulation, Function, and Therapeutic Potential

Abstract

Nearly 300 million people in roughly 70 countries suffer from schistosomiasis, aninfectious disease caused by parasites known as schistosomes. Schistosomes areflatworms belonging to the genus Schistosoma, of which three species are of particularimportance to humans: Schistosoma mansoni, S. japonicum, and S. haematobium. Theseparasitic platyhelminths have the ability to innocuously infect humans and cause chronicinflammation of major organs that often results in serious health complications or death.
