Understanding Integration: Perspectives of Primary Care Behavioral Health among Family Medicine Residents and Faculty

Abstract

While primary care has remained the de facto mental health service delivery environment in the United States, there has been concern about the ability to fully staff primary care to meet these demands (14). Many patients seen in primary care do not subsequently access the mental health resources that are recommended - in the military nearly half of those individuals referred for specialty care do not make their first appointment (32). As such, there has been considerable promise demonstrated from the use of integrated and embedded behavioral health professionals that are available directly in primary care (18; 39; 45).
