Implementation of Aromatherapy, a Non-pharmacological Intervention, to Reduce Anxiety during the Preoperative Period

Abstract

Anxiety experienced during the preoperative period can lead to increases in pain, nausea, and length of stay, ultimately decreasing patient satisfaction and increasing cost. Currently, NMCSD lacks a non-pharmacological intervention or process to help reduce preoperative anxiety. There is often a significant amount of waiting prior to surgery that could be optimized by implementing a non-pharmacological measure (aromatherapy via STILL soothing scents) to potentially reduce anxiety in patients preoperatively.
