Addressing Primary Care Providers Confidence in the Management of Overweight and Obese Active-Duty Service Members Using the 5As Toolkit

Abstract

In 2015, more than 65% of active-duty service members(ADSM) were overweight or obese and this percentage continues to increase. To further complicate this problem, less than half of all primary care providers address patient weight status at their periodic health examinations due to feeling uncomfortable, lacking time, or not feeling competent enough to work through the issue. With the transition of healthcare under the Defense Health Agency (DHA), providers must have confidence in their ability to manage their patients care to ensure the Quadruple Aim is met increased readiness and better health by providing better care at lower costs.
