Mortality Surveillance in the U.S. Army, 2014-2019
Abstract
The report characterizes all deaths among U.S. Army Active Duty Soldiers from January 2014 to December 2019, assesses trends in annual crude rates, and compares direct age- and sex-adjusted mortality rates between the U.S. and Army populations. This report also presents preliminary mortality data for calendar year 2020. During this period, there were 2,530 deaths in the Active Component of the U.S. Army. Suicide (35 ) and accidental (32 ) deaths accounted for the largest proportion of deaths. The most prevalent causes of death included suicide by gunshot wound and motor vehicle crashes. Significant trends were not observed for rates of suicide and accidental death, but they remained consistently elevated. This reinforces continued focus on evaluating and refining current suicide prevention and transportation-related safety programs.
