Congressional Oversight: The General Accounting Office

Abstract

Completed congressional assignments have also more than doubled since 1985. The proportion of our staff years spent on the specific requests of the Congress has also increased, from 36 percent when I took office in 1981, to 57 percent in 1985 and 82 percent in 1992. Infact, in 1992, we addressed at least one written report to 213 House Members and 86Senators. Compared to 1985, this is an 82-percent increase in the number of House Members served and a 23-percent increase in the number of Senators. All in all, I believe these statistics illustrate the Congress increasing reliance on GAO for accurate, in its deliberations on the important decisions facing the nation.
