Battlefield Acupuncture in the Management of Non-Traumatic Low Back Pain in Service Members

Abstract

Low back pain (LBP) among US active-duty service members (ADSMs) is a common ailment and a leading cause of permanent disability in the Army (Rhon and Fritz, 2015). Studies show that 7.4% of active duty soldiers have at least one diagnosis of LBP, and of those, 50%have more than one documented episode (Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center [AFHSC], 2010). LBP can lead to physical limitations, psychological symptoms, and a reduced quality of life.
