The Effects of Therapy Dog Intervention on Distress in Adult Patients Undergoing Dental Procedures: A Pilot Study

Abstract

An estimated 6-14% of the United States population avoid dental treatment due toanxiety. Avoidance of routine dental care can precipitate deteriorating oral health requiring morecomplex and expensive treatment. Options for management of dental anxiety includepsychological and pharmacological therapies. Therapy dogs have been used to decrease dentalanxiety in children. However, there is no current research on the impact of therapy dogs onadults with dental anxiety.
