The Impact of the "Strong Black Woman" Schema, Stigma, and Discrimination on Professional Mental Health Help-Seeking Intentions Among Modern-Day Black Women
Abstract
he purpose of this study was threefold: 1) examine the type and level of distress experienced by Black women; 2) investigate the impact of socio-cultural factors, such as the Strong Black Woman (SBW) Schema, stigma, and discrimination on help-seeking intentions among Black women of higher SES (Modern-Day Black Women [MDBW])using an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model; and 3) explore MDBWs attitudes, beliefs, and potential barriers to help-seeking. The study included a sample of111 Black women and utilized a mixed method approach to investigate these culturally related variables toward help-seeking intentions. Linear regressions revealed that higher income was associated with lower levels of psychological distress (p =.01).
