The Effects of Therapy Dog Intervention on Distress in Adult Patients Undergoing Dental Procedures: A Pilot Study

Abstract

Fear of the dentist continues to be one of the top reported causes of anxiety in populations around the world. This anxiety is detrimental to the oral health of patients because they may avoid necessary dental treatment. In order to alleviate this anxiety, professionals use varying pharmacological and behavioral techniques to manage anxious patients. One technique that has been researched involves using therapy dogs with children, but this intervention has not been sufficiently studied within the adult dental anxiety population.
