Space Domain and NATO Operations: A Critical S and T Review

Abstract

The SCI-318 Specialists Meeting held from 25 - 27 June 2019 was hosted by the Army Education and Training Command, School of Applied Military Studies, Turin, Italy. The objectives of the event were to raise awareness of and assess the current space-focused collaborative program of work of the NATO Science and Technology Organization and to make recommendations for the future of space-focused efforts under the STOs guidance. The Specialists Meeting participants conducted a technical tour of Thales Alenia Space and Altec to help set the tone for the technical discussions that followed. In addition, the participants reviewed presentations on the ongoing and planned work from five of the seven STO Panels which consisted of seven current and four planned space-focused activities across the STOs collaborative program of work. For context, this represents approximately 5% of the 300+ ongoing activities in the collaborative program of work. After the reviewing the current and planned activities, the participants broke out into syndicates to formulate recommendations for consideration by the STO and the nations that support its collaborative program of work.
