Technology Alternatives for Medical Training: Minimizing Live Tissue Use

Abstract

The use of animals to model combat casualty care, also called Live Tissue Training (LTT), is one component of training military medics, medical teams, and surgeons to perform in high stress operational environments. LTT has been an important contribution to combat casualty care. Combat casualty care now has the lowest recorded case fatality rates in spite of increased injury severity. LTT has come under increased scrutiny in many countries. Educational, scientific, and technological advances may provide opportunities to reduce reliance on LTT. NATO nations wish to ensure the best training for military medical personnel while minimizing LTT. Therefore, the objective of this working group was to provide recommendations to reduce and refine LTT use without compromising the readiness of military medical personnel.
