Urban Combat Advanced Training Technology Live Simulation Standards

Abstract

The Urban Combat Advanced Training Technology (UCATT) effort consists of several consecutive Task Groups (TG) within the NATO Modelling and Simulation Group (NMSG): MSG-032, MSG-063, MSG-098,MSG-099 and MSG-140. Related to this are the SISO UCATT Product Development Group (PDG) and the UCATT Product Support Group (PSG).The UCATT aim is to identify, create and maintain a standard set of interfaces that enable interoperability of live training components without inhibiting future research and enhancements. Initially focused on the urban environment, the UCATT family of standards is applicable for live training exercises in many different operational environments. Prior to MSG-140, UCATT has provided NATO with a site register, a generic Functional Architecture of live training systems, the identification of interfaces and their associated datasets that need to be standardised in order to enable different levels of interoperability, a documented live interoperability demonstration, best practices and a usable SISO standard for a laser engagement interface(the UCATT Laser Engagement Interface Standard U-LEIS). The objective of MSG-140 UCATT Live Simulation Standards (UCATT-LSS) was to further develop and support the SISO UCATT family of standards. The TG has: Validated the applicability of existing and evolving standards for interfacing to the simulation environment, developed by other NATO or SISO working groups, in order to ensure synchronisation and avoid overlap in effort and products; Elaborated the user requirements and functional requirements of the interfaces based on current training practices and military and technological developments; Transferred the currently used functional architecture into the NATO Architecture Framework(NAF) where applicable, to verify the validity of the architectural approach in relation to physical implementations;
