Demonstration and Validation of Siloxane-Based Aircraft Topcoats that are Isocyanate-Free and Provide a Reduced Environmental Impact (ESTCP WP-201506)
Abstract
Polyurethane topcoats for aircraft and support equipment are qualified to MIL-PRF-85285 performance requirements. However, these topcoats contain hazardous isocyanate-functional molecules, which result in health issues for individuals who are exposed during paint operations. During this project, NRL-developed polysiloxane topcoats, which are free of isocyanates and lower in volatile solvents, demonstrated they can provide equivalent, and in some instances improved, laboratory and field performance compared to polyurethanes.
