Comprehensive Architecture Strategy (CAS)

Abstract

A successful Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) must consider and manage four individual aspects of Acquisition: Acquisition Strategy; Intellectual Property Strategy; Documentation Strategy; and Architecture Strategy. The first three are well chronicled and documented, the fourth is less well understood and guidance is sparse. This document provides an introduction to a Comprehensive Architecture Strategy (CAS) for mission systems. The strategy integrates business and technical concerns to support the efficient development and sustainment of mission systems that meet MOSA business concerns when coupled with traditional systems engineering processes aimed at achieving functional and performance needs. A managed architecture ensures components and systems are aligned to overarching business and technical objectives. When implemented, the CAS provides the final aspect of a MOSA. It enables programs following the strategy to realize and meet MOSA requirements. The CAS guides the development of a MOSA by determining the specific business and technical objectives to be gained and the appropriate system modularity and key interface specification needed to successfully implement a MOSA.
