Foundational Research in Behavioral and Social Sciences: 2021 Summary

Abstract

The Basic Research Program within the Foundational Science Research Unit of the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) aims to develop and advance state-of-the-art theories, measures, and methods in the behavioral and social sciences. This work includes research that ranges from incremental theory building to large paradigm shifts. The Basic Research Program provides the scientific basis for the Army to modernize the personnel testing, organizational, training, and leader development systems of the Army, as well as identifies avenues for the Army to maximize unit effectiveness. This report provides a listing and brief synopsis of ongoing and recently completed extramural basic research efforts supported by ARI, organized into five research portfolios: personnel testing and performance; leader development; organizational effectiveness; learning in formal and informal environments; and culture.
