Increasing Surgical Supply Cost Transparency Using a Balanced Scorecard

Abstract

Background or Problem/Issue: Despite accounting for 50% of an operating rooms budget, the Military Health System (MHS) lacks consistent processes to track surgical supply expenses accrued during surgery. Surgeons have control over 80% of surgical supply costs but correctly estimate pricing for routinely used items on less than 10% of occasions. The absence of benchmarks creates a gap in cost transparency required to assess financial performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
