Multiplexed Imaging to Improve and Define Diagnosis and Subsequent Treatment for Patient Suffering from Gulf War Illness Using CyTOF and Codex
Abstract
Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a complex, yet poorly understood disease defined by various symptoms including gastrointestinal problems like chronic diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, and others impairing the soldiers lives. In this project, we are trying to find answers allowing us to better diagnose and potentially treat patients suffering from GWI using spatialomic and single-cell technologies to analyze tissue derived from affected patients and healthy individuals versus patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the progress of the study has been majorly delayed as research was on hold at Stanford and the VA Palo Alto, and committee meetings of IRB authorities were only irregularly. However, we have been able to test samples from IBD patients with CyTOF and identify and validate our biomarker library needed for Codex and laid the foundation to quickly visualize bacteria on tissue biopsies with fluorescent probes.
